Black Holes Vocabulary word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this black holes vocabulary puzzle set for my 4th and 5th graders during our space unit. The kids were fascinated by the idea of black holes but had no idea what words like singularity, event horizon, or accretion disk meant when we started learning about these mysterious objects. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using terms like black hole, event horizon, singularity, gravitational pull, escape velocity, accretion disk, supermassive, stellar mass, neutron star, supernova, and light . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "singularity" or whether a black hole is really a hole (it's not—it's a collapsed star, and the kids always have opinions about it). The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple black circle and space drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 4th through 6th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one term from the puzzles and explain it in their own words on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
