About this resource

What's inside this resource

Ten short French-language stories, each about one page long, follow a different student through a back-to-school moment: Léa's excited first day, Paul checking his cartable, Sophie discovering her new classroom, Julien at recess, Camille starting at a new school, Maxime shopping for school supplies, a science class experiment with vinegar and baking soda, a back-to-school school fair, a class picnic, and Emma running for student council. Each story is followed by three or four open-ended written questions, such as "Pourquoi Léa est-elle excitée?" and "Quelles fournitures scolaires Maxime achète-t-il avec sa maman?", with blank lines for students to write their answers directly on the page. A name line appears at the top of every page for individual use.

From the author

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Read a short French narrative text and answer literal comprehension questions about it in writing.

  • Identify key story details, such as characters, settings, and events, from a French-language text.

  • Practice writing complete answers in French in response to open-ended questions.

Teaching tips

  • Assign one story per day during the first two weeks of school, since all ten share a back-to-school theme suited to that time of year.

  • Have students underline the answer to each question directly in the story text before writing their response, since no answer key is provided for self-checking.

  • Pair students to compare their written answers after finishing a story, since several questions (such as the science-class text on page 7) ask for multi-part answers.

Skills covered

  • Reading comprehension in French — students read a short narrative and answer three to four literal questions about it (all 10 pages).

  • Detail retrieval — students locate specific facts, such as a character's name or an object listed in the text, to answer questions like 'Que contient le cartable de Léa?'

  • Written response in French — students compose their own written answers on the blank lines beneath each question.
