Fables Aesop's Stories word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this Aesop's fables puzzle set for my 2nd and 3rd graders during our folktale unit. The kids loved the animal stories but kept mixing up which fable had which moral. They knew the tortoise was slow and the hare was fast, but they needed the extra practice to separate "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" from "The Fox and the Grapes." So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using vocabulary from these classic tales . The word search includes character names and key objects, and the scramble gives them practice with words like "boast" and "plod" from "The Tortoise and the Hare" and "gnaw," "trap," and "bound" from "The Lion and the Mouse" . I also threw in some of the famous moral phrases like "slow and steady wins the race" so they'd start to recognize those patterns.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess, and the scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "tortoise" or what it really means to be "overconfident" . I usually add some picture cards of the animals nearby for the kids who need a visual, and sometimes we act out the moral before they start. The crossword I use for partners or as a review after we've read a few fables aloud , and I've even used it as a quick sub plan when I'm out for a PD day.
Works for 2nd through 4th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one word from the puzzles and write a sentence about what it means in the story on the back, or I ask them to draw a scene from their favorite fable. The kids actually ask for these now.
