Freshwater Ecosystems word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this freshwater ecosystems puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our Earth science unit. The kids knew about lakes and rivers but had no idea about wetlands, bogs, or what the word "salinity" meant when I explained the difference between saltwater and freshwater. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like lake, river, stream, pond, wetland, marsh, swamp, bog, freshwater, salinity, ecosystem, habitat, current, tributary, meander, and floodplain. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the difference between a marsh and a swamp or whether a pond is different from a lake. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple water lily, cattail, and fish drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers name one plant or animal that lives in a freshwater ecosystem on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
