About This Product

Help students connect what they see in a growing pattern with the rule that produces it. This grades 4-5 math unit uses square pictures, tables, stated construction rules, and explanations so students can distinguish a stage total from the amount added at each step.

The six sequences develop a connected route through the topic. Students identify fixed and growing parts, link pictures to tables, calculate later stages, compare two patterns at the same stage, test rules and claims, and build a pattern system of their own. The main patterns use constant additive growth. A short contrast also shows why a finite number list by itself need not determine a single next term.

The 36 tasks contain 48 response components, including calculations, open constructions, drawings, comparisons, and explanations. Students check later-stage totals in two ways and use bounded counterexamples to challenge claims. Exact square diagrams and disclosed rules provide the information needed, so students can explain rather than guess.

Teacher guidance separates mathematical accuracy from justification and explains copying, support, marking, and follow-up. Reasoned answer keys recognize equivalent calculations and valid alternative constructions. Oral explanations or sketches can help students show their reasoning without removing the mathematical demand.

The resource is intended for US grades 4-5 students who can count equal groups, multiply small whole numbers, subtract, and read a simple table. A stage-number placeholder is explained; formal function notation is not required. Pencils and printed pages are sufficient, with no purchased manipulatives, software, or internet tasks needed.

Four noneditable PDFs are included: a complete 26-page resource and a separate 17-page student packet in both US Letter and A4. Both sizes contain the same American English teaching content. Teacher guidance and reasoned keys are in the complete resource. Use the six progression sequences flexibly across lessons.
