High-Frequency Words Set 1 word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this high-frequency words puzzle set for my K and 1st graders during our reading foundations unit. The kids were learning that some words just need to be memorized because they don't follow phonics rules. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like the, and, to, of, a, in, is, it, you, that, he, was, for, on, are, as, with, his, they, at, be, this, from, I, have, or, by, one, had, not, but, what, all, were, we, when, your, can, said, there, and use. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the most common words finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about how to spell "said" or "they." The crossword I use for partners with picture clues. I added a couple simple star and happy face drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for K through 2nd grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one word and use it in a sentence on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
