Kindergarten Color Words word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this color words puzzle set for my Kindergarteners during our beginning of the year art and literacy unit. The kids could point to colors but kept mixing up the words for red, blue, and yellow, especially when we were doing color sorting activities. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, pink, brown, black, white, and gray. I also threw in a few color sentences like "The apple is red" to reinforce the connection between the word and the color. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the color vocabulary finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or indoor recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "orange" or whether "gray" and "grey" are the same color. The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have a set of color swatches nearby for the kids who need visual support. I added a couple simple color block and crayon drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for Pre-K through 1st grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers color a rainbow on the back and label each color with a word from the puzzle. The kids actually ask for these now.
