Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
- Trace and independently write the uppercase and lowercase letter X
- Match the lowercase x to its uppercase X counterpart
- Visually locate the letter X among similar-looking capital letters
- Follow a maze path formed by repeated instances of the letter X
- Distinguish words that begin with X from decoy words beginning with other letters
Teaching tips
- Pre-teach the four 'X is for' words (Xerus, Xylocrap, Xerox, x-ray) before that page, since none except x-ray are common preschool vocabulary
- Read the word-bank page aloud rather than assigning it independently, since Xenon, Xystus, and Xylem are unlikely to be in a preschooler's spoken vocabulary
- Group the find-and-color, find-and-circle, and maze pages together as one visual-discrimination session, since all three drill the same skill in different formats
- Verify 'Xylocrap' before printing - it does not match any standard English word and most likely should read 'Xylophone,' the conventional X-is-for example
Skills covered
- Letter recognition
- Letter tracing
- Fine motor skills
- Visual discrimination
- Beginning letter sounds
Good to know
Questions teachers ask about this resource
Is "Xylocrap," printed on the X-is-for page, a real word?
It does not appear to be. No English word "Xylocrap" exists; the intended word is very likely "Xylophone," the standard beginner example for X, and this looks like an uncorrected typo in the source file.
Is the vocabulary used across the whole packet appropriate for the preschool level named in the title?
Only partly. The tracing, coloring, maze, and letter-search pages suit preschool age, but the 'X is for' and word-bank pages use words (Xerus, Xystus, Xenon, Xylem) well above typical preschool vocabulary and will likely need to be read and explained by an adult.
