Letters I Can Write is a comprehensive early writing series designed around the hidden skills that make writing possible. Rather than jumping straight to writing, each letter is treated as a complete mini lesson: moving through letter-sound awareness, letter recognition, hand warm-up activities, and writing practice in a carefully scaffolded sequence. The workbook draws from principles in occupational therapy, early childhood education, and speech-language pathology to support the full range of young learners, including those who benefit from extra time, reduced demand, or multisensory approaches.

Start with "Sticks" (Ll, Tt, Ii, Ff), progress to "Curves" (Cc, Oo, Uu, Ee, Ss, Hh, Bb, Pp, Dd, Jj, Gg, Qq), and end with "Slides" (Rr, Nn, Mm, Vv, Ww, Zz, Aa, Xx, Yy, Kk).

Objective

Students will develop foundational writing skills through a structured, joyful progression that builds letter-sound awareness, letter recognition, fine motor warm-up, and independent letter formation. One letter at a time, with confidence at the centre of every lesson.

Contents

The workbook opens with a caregiver/teacher guide explaining the hidden prerequisites behind writing, and suggestions for pacing and adaptation. Each lesson is self-contained and can be used in isolation or as part of the full sequence.

Each of the 4 letter lessons follows the same six-page structure:

1. Letter-sound awareness: Students identify objects that begin with the target letter sound through I Spy, colouring, or connect-the-dots activities. This page is designed to be completed together with a caregiver or teacher.

2. Letter recognition: Students distinguish the target letter from other letters through spot-the-difference, hidden-letter searches, mazes, or sorting activities. Recognition activities include both uppercase and lowercase forms across varied fonts and sizes.

3. Uppercase warm-up: Students prepare their hand for letter formation through tracing, connect-the-dots, mazes, or sequential colouring activities. Conventional stroke order is embedded naturally without explicit instruction. Multisensory alternatives (playdough, back-drawing, finger tracing) are suggested.

4. Uppercase writing practice with fading support: Students trace the letter with full guidance, then with reduced support, and finally write it independently. Writing activities include silly sentences, jokes, and word completion tasks to keep engagement high and reduce the pressure of performance.
