Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Respond to a partner's reasoning using a set form of words, agreeing or disagreeing with a stated reason

  • Restate what a partner has said before replying to it

  • Describe the strategy used to solve a problem rather than only reporting the answer

Teaching tips

  • Choose the prompts that match your discussion goal; the five designs contain overlapping selections.

  • Print the Black and White version on colored paper if desired.

  • Introduce a few prompts for explaining and responding before adding the rest.

Skills covered

  • Explaining mathematical thinking - students use a sentence stem to describe how they approached a problem.

  • Active listening - "What I heard you say was…" and "I agree/disagree with you because…" give students a form of words for responding to a partner's reasoning.

  • Offering peer support - "I can help you with this problem." gives a scripted opener for a student who wants to step in.

Good to know

Questions teachers ask about this resource

Do all five designs contain exactly the same materials?

No. They offer overlapping math-talk prompts, with differences in the poster selections. Three files also include four-copy desk-reference sheets; Arrow and Talk Bubble do not.

Is there an option without a color printer?

Yes. Black-and-white layouts are supplied, and the guide suggests printing them on colored paper.
