National Day of Truth and Reconciliation Word Scramble – Unscramble to Understand
I created this activity for my Grade 6 class to meaningfully recognize September 30th. Students work to unscramble 24 important terms like "residential," "healing," and "Elder" – then match them to their significance in Indigenous cultures. The room got quiet when someone solved "GNIRUDTS" (survivor) and asked thoughtful questions.
What’s Included:
✔ 2 printable pages (scramble + answer key)
✔ Bonus reflection activity (students connect words to reconciliation efforts)
✔ Respectful orange shirt graphic
Powerful Moment:
"A student whispered 'Now I get why we wear orange' after solving 'HOSCRT' (orange shirt)." – Ms. K, Indigenous Education Teacher
Perfect For:
• Truth and Reconciliation Week
• Orange Shirt Day events
• Social studies lessons
Sample Scrambles:
TIDENAL (Answer: indent)
LERDE (Answer: elder)
VORISURV (Answer: survivor)
Teacher Tip:
Pair with Phyllis Webstad’s book – pause reading to unscramble key terms as they appear.
