National Parks word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this national parks puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our geography and nature unit. The kids had heard of Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, but they had no idea there were over 60 national parks or what words like geyser, canyon, or wildlife meant when we talked about the incredible landscapes and animals you can find there . I also wanted to introduce them to a few specific parks like Acadia, Zion, and the Great Smoky Mountains . They kept asking questions like “What’s the tallest mountain in the park?” or “Are there really wolves in Yellowstone?” so I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words that help the vocabulary finally stick .

The PDF is four pages—three puzzles plus one answer key. The word search works well for quiet time after recess, and the scramble gets them talking because they argue about how to spell “Yellowstone” or whether “geyser” is a type of rock or a hot spring . The crossword I use for partners or as a review after we’ve looked at pictures of parks like Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, and the Great Smoky Mountains . I also made sure to include a few key terms like “wildlife,” “hiking,” and “canyon” because they keep coming up in our conversations about what makes these places so special .

Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one park from the puzzles and write one fact about it on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
