Nelson Mandela word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this Nelson Mandela puzzle set for my 4th graders during our world history and human rights unit. The kids had heard his name but had no idea what apartheid was or why Mandela was in prison for so long. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like Mandela, South Africa, apartheid, segregation, prison, freedom, equality, justice, leader, president, peace, Nobel, forgiveness, unity, and human rights. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the facts finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about how many years Mandela spent in prison. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple dove and South Africa outline drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write one thing Mandela is famous for on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
