Ocean Zones word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this ocean zones puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our Earth science unit. The kids knew the ocean was deep, but they had no idea that it's divided into layers with different amounts of light, temperature, and types of creatures. They kept asking questions like "How deep is the sunlight zone?" and "Do fish live at the very bottom?" So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using vocabulary like Sunlight Zone, Twilight Zone, Midnight Zone, Abyss, Trench, photosynthesis, bioluminescence, pressure, plankton, and adaptation . I also made sure to include a few terms like "marine snow" and "vertical migration" because they came up when we watched videos about deep-sea creatures.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "bioluminescence" or whether the "twilight zone" has anything to do with the TV show from the 1960s (it doesn't, but the kids always make that connection) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review after we've drawn our own ocean zone diagrams in class. I added a couple simple drawings of a depth scale, a fish with big teeth, and a glowing jellyfish but nothing too busy.

Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one ocean zone from the puzzles and write one fact about the animals that live there on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
