  • Explain how Earth's rotation and revolution produce day and night and the year, and identify axial tilt rather than distance from the sun as the cause of the seasons

  • Describe why the moon shows phases and distinguish a lunar from a solar eclipse by the positions of sun, Earth and moon

  • Trace energy through a food chain and a food web from producers to top consumers, and predict the knock-on effect of removing one organism

  • Separate reflection, refraction and colour absorption in light, and connect pitch and loudness to how fast and how strongly an object vibrates

  • Relate an object's mass to the force needed to start it moving, and name friction and gravity as the forces acting in everyday situations

  • Write a multi-part explanation in complete sentences using science vocabulary

Teaching tips

  • Run the whole test as a late-winter or early-spring benchmark across two sittings of roughly 90 to 120 minutes under quiet independent conditions, or take one domain a week across a three-week unit

  • Pre-teach the vocabulary lists the guide supplies for each section - rotation, revolution, orbit, phase, eclipse and constellation for Earth and space; producer, consumer, decomposer, adaptation, photosynthesis and herbivore for life science; reflection, refraction, vibration, pitch, force, friction, gravity and mass for physical science

  • Teach the signal words explicitly before test day: BEST, MOST LIKELY, PRIMARILY and MAINLY mean choose the most complete option, while NOT, EXCEPT and LEAST flip the question and are worth underlining

  • Have students label parts (a), (b) and (c) of each written item - the guide warns that question 55 has three parts and that answering only the first two costs a point

  • Calibrate scoring with a colleague first: mark the same response side by side, settle any disagreement against the rubric wording, agree on five more, then split the class set

  • Reteach the three areas the guide names as hardest at grade 5 - the cause of seasons (Q4), the direction of energy flow in food webs (Q22), and the relationship between mass and force (Q46, Q47, Q55)

  • Earth and space reasoning - students identify the sun as the closest star, place the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and separate lunar from solar eclipses across the first eighteen items.

How are the fifty-five items split between the science domains?

Evenly, near enough: Earth & Space Science takes questions 1 to 18, Life Science 19 to 37, and Physical Science 38 to 55 - eighteen, nineteen and eighteen items. The teacher's guide prints the same split as a domain alignment chart.

Which questions ask students to write rather than choose?

Four, each with a "Show your thinking" workspace: question 18 on why the moon shows phases and where the sun, Earth and moon sit at full moon; question 37 on a meadow food web and what happens to foxes and hawks if the rabbits vanish; question 47 on whether a brick-loaded wagon needs more force and what slows it once rolling; and question 55, a three-part skateboarder problem on gravity, friction and mass.
