Peace Activists word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this peace activists puzzle set for my 4th and 5th graders during our social studies and biography unit. The kids could name Martin Luther King Jr. and maybe Gandhi, but they had no idea about the incredible diversity of peace activists around the world and throughout history. They kept asking things like "Can kids be peace activists?" or "Do peace activists only use words?" So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using names like Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Malala Yousafzai, Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Jane Addams, Thich Nhat Hanh, Wangari Maathai, Rigoberta Menchú, Bana Alabed (the young Syrian activist who won the 2025 International Children's Peace Prize) , and Yoko Ono (who has been an activist since the 1960s) . I also included key peace-related terms like nonviolence, justice, freedom, equality, solidarity, human rights, protest, dialogue, and advocacy because they show up in every conversation about peace .

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "Yousafzai" or whether "Gandhi" used nonviolence effectively. The crossword I use for partners or as a review after we've watched short biographies or read picture books about these leaders. I added a couple simple dove, olive branch, and peace sign drawings but nothing too busy. I also made sure to include examples of young activists like Malala and Bana so the kids realize you don't have to be an adult to make a difference.

Works for 4th through 6th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one activist from the puzzles and write one fact about them or what peace means to them on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
