Pioneers in Medicine word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this pioneers in medicine puzzle set for my 4th graders during our biography and health unit. The kids could name a few famous doctors like Hippocrates, but they had no idea about the incredible range of pioneers who shaped modern healthcare—from the discovery of X-rays and penicillin to the first successful heart transplant and the development of the polio vaccine. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using names like Hippocrates, Galen, William Harvey, Joseph Lister, Florence Nightingale, Marie Curie, Alexander Fleming, Jonas Salk, Helen Taussig, and Vivien Thomas. I also included key terms like anesthesia, vaccine, and stethoscope because they come up in every conversation about medical breakthroughs.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about how to spell "stethoscope" or whether penicillin was discovered by accident (it was—the kids always find that story fascinating). The crossword I use for partners or as a review after we've read short biographies or watched video clips about these pioneers. I added a couple simple stethoscope, heart, and microscope drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 4th through 6th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one pioneer from the puzzles and write one fact about what they achieved on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
