Popular Sports Slang word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this popular sports slang puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our sports unit and idioms lesson. The kids love hearing phrases like "GOAT" and "slam dunk" but had no idea what most of them meant outside the context of a game, or that many come from specific sports like boxing, baseball, or basketball . So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using popular slang terms like GOAT (Greatest Of All Time), slam dunk, Hail Mary, hat trick, home run, ballpark figure, and MVP . I also included everyday idioms like "the ball is in your court" and "throw in the towel" because they come up all the time in conversation . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess, and the scramble gets them talking because they argue about what GOAT actually stands for or whether a "Hail Mary" is always a desperate pass . The crossword I use for partners, and I usually have a list of the sports they come from nearby for the kids who need extra help . I added a couple simple basketball, baseball, and football drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one slang term from the puzzles and use it in a sentence that's NOT about sports on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
