Refugee Vocabulary word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this refugee vocabulary puzzle set for my 4th and 5th graders during our social studies unit on global communities. The kids had heard of refugees but had no idea what words like refugee, asylum, or resettle meant when we talked about people who had to leave their homes. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like refugee, asylum, resettle, shelter, safety, journey, hope, war, peace, home, flee, escape, volunteer, and community. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or indoor recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the difference between a refugee and an immigrant. The crossword I use for partners or as a review. I added a couple simple boat, house, and heart drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write one way they can welcome a newcomer on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
