Choose between por and para in twelve everyday Spanish sentences about travel, meals and daily routine
State the contrast in terms of process and goal: por marks part of the process, para marks its objective
Recognise that duration and time-of-day expressions take por, as in "Nado por 50 minutos" and "Tomo té por la tarde"
Teaching tips
Work the first sheet (items a to f) as guided practice and leave the second (g to l) for independent work; both carry the same six-item layout and the same direction line.
Pull the paired items out for a mini-lesson: "Viajo por trabajo" against "Viajo para relajarme" uses the same verb with different prepositions and complements to contrast a reason with a purpose.
Read the Explicación section first with a class meeting the contrast for the first time, or hold it back as a self-check when the sheets are used for review.

It describes the contrast this way: POR forms part of the process, PARA is the objective of that process. Three model sentences show both inside one clause, among them "Camino por la Avenida 5 para llegar al mercado."
