Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Conjugate the verb venir in the present tense across all persons

  • Recognise a conjugated form of venir in running letters rather than in a chart, by locating each in the word search

  • Write an original Spanish sentence using venir in the present tense

Teaching tips

  • The word search asks students to find the conjugated verbs rather than giving them a word list, so the chart has to be completed accurately first - it is worth checking the chart before the puzzles are started

  • Venir is irregular in the present, so this sheet works better as reinforcement after the forms have been taught than as a first encounter with them

  • The sudoku-style grid uses pronoun-and-verb phrases, so have students read those phrases aloud as an extension

Skills covered

  • Present-tense conjugation of an irregular verb - the sheet opens with a chart for venir headed CONJUGATE: Present for use alongside matching, word puzzles and sentence writing.

  • Recognising conjugated forms in context - the palabras escondidas grid asks students to find the conjugated verbs among letters rather than to copy them from a list.

  • Sentence production in Spanish - the page closes by asking for one original sentence using venir in the present tense.

Good to know

Questions teachers ask about this resource

Which language are the instructions in?

Both, mixed. The activity titles are Spanish - NOMBRE, PALABRAS ESCONDIDAS, CRUCIGRAMA - while the directions beneath them are English: "CONJUGATE: Present", "Find the conjugated verbs", "MATCH THE WORDS" and "Write a sentence using the verb VENIR in the present". Model unfamiliar vocabulary and the puzzle directions before independent practice.

What activities are on the page?

A venir conjugation chart, word search, matching task, crossword, sentence-writing line, and a sudoku-style grid using Spanish pronoun-and-verb phrases.

Does the word search supply the words to look for?

No list is printed - the instruction reads "Find the conjugated verbs", so the target words are the forms of venir the student has just written into the chart. That makes the puzzle a check on the chart rather than an independent task.
