This pack is suitable for the young child just learning to read, or the younger (under 8) child who needs a slower pace.

The main strength of Reading Made Simple:

Reading Made Simple is a literacy programme where nothing is left to chance. The stories are 100% decodable, and each one builds on the vocabulary of the ones before it, so a child never meets a word they haven’t been taught to read. That takes away the temptation to guess, and it gives every child the confidence to read well, because there are no curveballs to throw them off track.

This book teaches the sounds: CK, OO, EE, SH, CH, ND/NT, NK, TH, NG, SUFFIX ING, AR and OR.

How each lesson works

1. Learn to use the simple low-prep teaching plan - it's the same each lesson

2. Learn the new sound.

3. Learn to decode words that use it.

4. Learn a small set of words, and practise them in sentences.

5. Meet those words again in the longer story.

By the time a child reaches the story, they have already practised everything in it.

Low-prep Supporting activities

The worksheets give children the practice they need to embed each new sound before they read the story. They meet the sound several times in different ways, so the story is a chance to show what they can do rather than a test.

Video lessons

The videos support teachers and parents. Use them to reinforce your own teaching, and to see how the programme works in practice before you teach a lesson yourself.

Building firm foundations in reading, spelling and writing

This is the first book of the Reading Made Simple Level 1 phonics programme. Lessons are taught one step at a time, and the course can be taken as slowly as a child needs. Work is planned over two weeks er lesson, but the course is flexible, and this can be more or less according to the needs of each child.

Easy to teach, easy to learn

Everything is structured to keep the load on a child’s working memory as light as possible. The method is simple and needs very little preparation from the teacher.

You don’t need anything else to teach it. Systematic phonics, spelling and morphology are taught through decodable stories about the farm characters, and each lesson has its own worksheet and video.

Fully decodable stories

The stories are 100% decodable, and each one builds on the vocabulary of the stories before it, so children only meet words they can already read. You can use them with any other programme, as long as the sounds they need have been taught.
