Tide Pool Science word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this tide pool science puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our ocean and marine ecosystems unit. The kids were fascinated by the small pools of water left behind when the tide goes out, but they had no idea what words like intertidal zone, adaptation, or desiccation meant . They kept mixing up the zones of the rocky shore and couldn't remember which animals lived where . So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like tide pool, high tide, low tide, intertidal, barnacle, mussel, sea star, anemone, urchin, hermit crab, limpet, chiton, algae, plankton, predator, prey, adapt, camouflage, exoskeleton, tentacle, tube feet, desiccation, salinity, oxygen, and space .

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess, and the scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of desiccation or whether a sea star and a starfish are the same thing (they are, but the kids always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have a simple diagram of the intertidal zones and pictures of the animals nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see which creatures live where .

Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one tide pool animal from the puzzles and draw a picture showing one adaptation that helps it survive on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
