Types of Flowers word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this types of flowers puzzle set for my 2nd and 3rd graders during our spring science unit. The kids could name a few common flowers like roses and sunflowers, but they had no idea about other beautiful flowers like zinnias, petunias, or dahlias—or what words like annual, perennial, or blossom meant when we talked about how flowers grow and bloom . So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using flower names like rose, tulip, daisy, sunflower, lily, orchid, violet, daffodil, marigold, peony, iris, lavender, aster, dahlia, carnation, poppy, chrysanthemum, lotus, jasmine, and freesia . I also included a few gardening terms like perennial, annual, and blossom because they came up when we looked at how different plants behave in different seasons . Nothing fancy—just puzzles to help the flower vocabulary finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "chrysanthemum" or whether a sunflower always faces the sun. The crossword I use for partners or as a review after we've looked at pictures of different flowers from our local gardens and parks. I added a couple simple flower, petal, and stem drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 2nd through 4th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one flower from the puzzles and draw it or write a sentence about where it grows on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
