Video Game Design Terms word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this video game design terms puzzle set for my 4th graders during our technology and creative writing unit. The kids loved talking about video games, but they had no idea what words like concept art, prototype, level design, UI, or user interface meant when we talked about how games are actually made—let alone how to pronounce rendering or hitbox. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using terms like character design, environment art, level design, puzzle, boss, platformer, shooter, UI, user interface, concept art, prototype, test, feedback, storyboard, animation, sound effects, dialogue, and cutscene . I also threw in render and hitbox because they kept coming up when I asked them what makes a game feel polished . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the design vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess, and the scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of environment or whether render and design are the same thing . The crossword I use for partners or as a review after we've sketched out our own game ideas . I added a couple simple controller, joystick, and pixel art drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 4th through 6th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers sketch a game idea on the back using at least three terms from the puzzle. The kids actually ask for these now.
