Weather Instruments Vocabulary word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this weather instruments puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our weather unit. The kids could tell me if it was sunny or rainy, but they had no idea what instruments like thermometer, barometer, or anemometer were used for, or how they measured things like temperature, pressure, and wind speed . They kept mixing up which instrument measured what, and they always asked whether a weather vane and a wind sock were the same thing . So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like thermometer, barometer, anemometer, wind vane, rain gauge, hygrometer, weather balloon, satellite, radar, wind sock, and weather station.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess, and the scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of anemometer (it's a tricky one) or whether a barometer and a thermometer are the same thing (they're not—they always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have simple diagrams of each instrument and what they measure (temperature, pressure, wind speed, humidity, rainfall) nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the differences . I added a couple simple thermometer, rain gauge, and wind vane drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one instrument and write a sentence about what it measures on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
