From the author

When you are looking for fun new ways to have students practice spelling words, this Word Work Choice Board is the way to go.

All you have to do is print one for each student or project it onto the smartboard.

There are 16 options to choose from.

Students will pick an option and can cross it off if they have their own individual choice board.

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Practice a spelling word list through a variety of writing and multisensory formats (color-coding, tracing, coding, drawing)

  • Choose independently among 16 spelling-practice methods to complete a self-directed word-work session

Teaching tips

  • Pair with any weekly spelling list, since the board itself supplies the practice format, not the words

  • Have students cross off each completed option on their own copy to track which of the 16 methods they've tried

  • Model one or two less-familiar options (like Triangle Spelling or Code Creation) before independent use, since their instructions are brief

Skills covered

  • Spelling practice through varied formats — students write, color-code, trace, or type the same word list using 16 different methods (e.g., 'Rainbow Spelling,' 'Ghost words,' 'Code Creation').

  • Independent task selection — students choose which of the 16 options to complete, working through a self-directed choice-board format.

  • Letter-sound and structure awareness — options like vowel/consonant color-coding and triangle spelling (building a word one letter at a time) draw attention to word structure.
