World Language Greetings in 10 Languages word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this world language greetings puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our global cultures unit. The kids knew how to say hello in English and maybe Spanish, but they had no idea that there are thousands of languages and that "hello" can look and sound completely different around the world. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using greetings from ten different languages: Hola (Spanish), Bonjour (French), Ciao (Italian), Hallo (German), Konnichiwa (Japanese), Ni hao (Chinese), Annyeonghaseyo (Korean), Namaste (Hindi), Shalom (Hebrew), and Salaam (Arabic). I also threw in a few greetings from less common languages like Jambo (Swahili), Merhaba (Turkish), and Guten Tag (German) just to keep it interesting.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or indoor recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about which greeting is the hardest to pronounce or whether "Ciao" is used in more than one country. The crossword I use for partners or as a review after we practice saying the greetings aloud. I added a couple simple flag and speech bubble drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers try to write "hello" in a language that isn't on the list and share it with the class the next day. The kids actually ask for these now.
