Here's an engaging way for your class to practice place value with decimal numbers from tenths to the millionths. All you need are a die, a counter, and the printed game pages! Students attempt to make the largest (or smallest) decimal number possible as digits are generated one at a time! • This lesson can work for many grades: you can play just tenths all the way to millionths! • It's a simple game, but it encourages strategy and critical thinking. • A super way to reinforce decimal concepts such as ordering and rounding. • Complete instructions and a sample round are included. How to Play: 1) Choose which place value you will practice with your class from tenths to millionths. 2) For the first round, choose if students are making the smallest or largest number they can. 3) Assign 1 side of the counter as zero and the other will indicated rolling the die. 4) Flip the coin or counter. Students must choose where to put the digit or the zero. 5) IMPORTANT: Numbers can not be moved after they are placed. 6) Continue this pattern until all the digits have been filled. Survey your class to see who made the largest or smallest number! 7)Now you can complete all sorts of math tasks: Order the numbers your students made. Round the numbers to the nearest one, tenth, or hundredth. Convert some decimals to fractions. Read the numbers accurately aloud. Once you have played around with the. numbers, play a second round. The Magna Carta - the Great Charter, a classroom play

Having my students involved in the learning process in my room is so much fun. Here is a 10-15 minute play to help bring alive history in your classroom! I use the Magna Carta play to help introduce the important topic of the Magna Carta. The overall theme, of course, is that no king (or government) is above the law. Three of the "rights" claimed by the unhappy barons are mentioned in the play, too. Currently, I am using this as part of an American History classroom. We are learning about the Roots of Representative Government. However, this resource can be used in many ways when learning about democracy, rights, the English Bill or Rights, the Declaration of Independence, and more. All have been influenced by Magna Carta. Students love being active while learning, and this gives them the chance. Every student can be involved if you choose. There are non-speaking parts like the "Knights of the King." Enjoy!

It includes clear teacher instructions for a fun class simulation where half of your students will act out a new "class norm" (five options are provided such as not raising your hand to ask a question) that the other half of your class won't be expecting. While the simulation is happening, everyone will be working on a three page reading comprehension task. Students will read about cultural norms from around the world (slurping noodles when eating in Japan or nodding one's head to say "no" in Bulgaria). They will imagine how not knowing about the cultural norms in a place where they are travelling could lead to accidental misunderstandings. Students are also taught a simple definition of the concept of stereotypes, and they will think of how they are different from cultural norms. Finally, there is a 1-page reflection with prompts- perfect for after a class discussion. Teacher Instructions: 1. Split your class in two and talk to only one half. 2. Tell them that they will have a new “class cultural norm.” Pick one from the provided ideas. 3. When the whole class is reunited, pass out the reading page & worksheets. Students read about cultural norms and answer the questions. 4. As they work, the selected half will enact their new norm, which will confuse the other half of the class. 5. Once the point has been made, let the other half in on the secret. 6. Have a discussion about cultural norms and give students time to write a reflection about this lesson.
