"The Place for Us" Comprehension Activity

If you are searching for resources to support the reading comprehension of your students, you’ll want something more than just answering multiple choice questions. Questioning is certainly a way to assess comprehension, but there are other components that can be included to assess this skill as well. This is a “The Place for Us” Comprehension Activity. It is for elementary students in 2nd – 4th grade. The objective is for students to demonstrate understanding of a passage by correctly completing given tasks. There are 4 pages included. The breakdown is as follows: Page 1 – A page long reading passage titled “The Place for Us.” You can read this as a whole group, have students read it with a partner or have them read it independently. Encourage students to highlight or circle words or parts of the story that feel important to them. Page 2 – A vocabulary graphic organizer . Students will find the 3 bolded words from the story and use them on this page. For each word, students will write a definition, give an example, illustrate a picture, and use the word in a sentence. Page 3 – Problem and Solution Graphic Organizer . Students will use the graphic organizers to outline details from the story in order to uncover the problem and solution. Page 4 – Asking and Answering Questions. Students will write two questions that they might ask someone to answer about the text under the “question” headings below. A friend will underline the answer in the text in purple and write the answer below. Each of these pages require students to revisit the passage and analyze it from a different perspective, which in turn furthers their comprehension for what they have read. I hope you enjoy! Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little Activities Compare and Contrast Characters

In this activity, students practice the skill of comparing characters from the novels Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, by E.B. White. Graphic organizers can be a great way to help students organize their thoughts. The graphic organizer I chose for this activity is a Venn Diagram . Venn Diagrams are perfect for comparing and contrasting two things. There are several characters in Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little that work well for this activity. I've created three worksheets where students will be comparing Wilbur and Stuart, Charlotte and Margalo, and Templeton and Snowbell. This activity works well with second through fourth graders who have read the stories. You could hand out the graphic organizers at the beginning of reading and have students add to them as you read through the book. Or, you could wait until you've finished reading. Depending on the level of your students, you could have them list words to describe the characters on a sheet of paper. They could then use that when filling out these diagrams. A great extension to this activity would be if you want students to write a paragraph comparing the two characters. The graphic organizer would help them organize their thoughts into a good paragraph. One of the 3rd grade Reading for Literature standards is comparing two different stories written by the same author. E.B. White is a great author for this age group, and Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little are two great stories to compare.

Richard Allen This First Grade Level H book is an interesting read for Black History Month. This month commemorates the achievements and history of African Americans. With this resource, your students can join in the February celebration! The text features Richard Allen, a builder and one of the first black legislators in Texas. Allen was born a slave in Richmond, Virginia in 1830. He was brought to Texas in 1837 and was eventually freed in 1865. He is credited with designing and building the Houston mayor's mansion and became a well-known contractor, bridge builder, and saloon owner. After the Civil War, he was a political leader and served one term in the Texas Legislature. He remained active in politics throughout his life. The book is sold individually as a Top Seller. It is also a part of the First Grade (Level G/H/I) Collection. Check out other biographies, fiction and non-fiction leveled books, and creative plays on this site by this author. What is included Besides the non-fiction biography, there are a variety of creative student activities. These are designed to strengthen the understanding of the material in a fun way. Looking at character development in a story is an important skill for students to learn. In this product, students will create a WANTED poster for a character in the novel Charlotte's Web, by E.B. White. Since it's a WANTED poster , the character chosen should be one that would be wanted for something. Depending on your students' levels, you may want to do a character analysis whole group, and discuss different things that characters have done. In this product, I have one WANTED poster with the name Avery Arable on it, one with the name Templeton, and one that does not have a name. That way students can choose another character if you'd like them to. Charlotte's Web is usually read by students in 2nd through 4th grade. Depending on your students' abilities, you could have them complete more than one WANTED poster . You could also have students complete them as a group. These would be a great activity to hang up on your classroom walls.
