The Constitution is A Living Document: A Project to Assess Knowledge and Understanding

The Constitution is A Living Document: A Project to Assess Knowledge and Understanding
Social Studies, Government, Grade 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Projects, Activities

The most important thing about this project, The Consitution is a Living Document, is how students truly internalize how the Constitution is not just some old stuffy document but really is alive in our lives and protects our rights and our democracy. I have had students come back to me when they are in high school to tell me how much they got out of this project. I have also had several students tell me they helped their immigrant parents pass the citizenship test. They were able to teach their parents about our government. My favorite is how many 8th-grade students tell me they are now interested in current events and regularly follow the news! The purpose of this project, The Consitution is a Living Document, is to assess students’ knowledge and understanding of the Constitution. The project is divided into 3 sections. The first section focuses on the Constitution, particularly Articles 1, 2, and 3. They will write an essay and then read 3 news articles that connect to each of these articles. They will summarize the articles and analyze how this news event connects to each of these articles. In Section 2, students will write an essay on the Bill of Rights and Amendments and read 7 more current events news articles, summarize them, and then analyze how each event connects to a specific amendment. The third section includes a Conclusion essay in which they reflect back on what they learned about themselves, doing a project of this magnitude, and about the Constitution, and a Bibliography. This is a comprehensive project and will take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks. For each section, I provide lesson plans with objectives and learning targets aligned with the Common Core Standards. teacher directions, student directions, handouts, graphic organizers, check-off sheets, and rubrics. This project could be easily modified to fit a shorter time frame. With modifications, it is appropriate for students in 6th through 12th grades. This project is part of my unit: “Our Living Consitution” which is designed using the Into, Through, and Beyond model of lesson planning. This project can be taught independently, but it is an excellent summative assessment for all my lessons on the Constitution in my unit. The lessons in the Constitution unit can be used independently or as a supplement to what you already teach or as a whole. Here is a summary of what is in the unit: Into Lessons: Creating Schema Lesson 1: Overview of the Constitution of the United States of America Slideshow and Notetaker Lesson 2: Origins of the Constitution Essential Terms and Notetaker Lesson 3: The Seven Principles of the Constitution Through Lessons: Learning the Content Lesson 4: The Goals of the Preamble, which includes a Preamble Project Lesson 5: The Three Branches of Government: Articles 1, 2, and 3 Lesson 6: How a Bill Becomes a Law and Project Lesson 7: Federalism and the System of Checks and Balances Lesson 8: Articles 4-7 Lesson 9: The Bill of Rights Unit (and a Little About Amendments 11-27) Extras (from the Unit: Every Four Years… The Presidential Election) Lesson 10: What Are Your Political Viewpoints? Lesson 11: Major and Minor Political Parties Lesson 12: A Brief History of Who Can Vote Lesson 13: Nuts and Bolts of the Presidential Election Beyond Lessons: Summative Assessments Study Guides and Tests are included, with many of the lessons Two Comprehensive Projects to Assess Knowledge and Understanding: --The Constitution is a Living Document Project --The Bill of Rights Explained Project

More or Less Math Activity - Numbers 1-10

More or Less Math Activity - Numbers 1-10
Math, Early Math, Numbers, Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2, Activities, Centers

Get ready for a math adventure with the More, Less, or Equal activity ! This five-page numbers comparison bonanza will have your students counting everything from apples to astronauts (okay, maybe just apples) and comparing them like mini mathematicians. Perfect for little learners, this activity is all about counting objects and figuring out who’s got more, who’s got less, or if it’s a tie. It’s like a math face-off, but with no losers, just lots of learning fun! Each page is packed with colorful objects that students can count and compare, because math is always better when there’s a picture of 10 cupcakes involved. First, they’ll count the objects on both sides (let’s hope they like counting chickens and balloons!), and then they’ll decide: is it more, less, or equal? As they solve each comparison, they'll sharpen their number sense, boost their confidence, and maybe even become "math detectives." Who knew counting could be so entertaining? Plus, no calculators needed, just their brilliant brains! With More, Less, or Equal, math isn’t about boring numbers, it’s about racing to see who has more ice cream cones! So grab your pencils, put on your thinking caps, and let the comparing begin. Enjoy!

Create-A-Candidate Civics Activity

Create-A-Candidate Civics Activity
Social Studies, Government, Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities, Projects

Genericbury City Election Activity Teacher Guide: Goal Statement: Students will be able to analyze how candidates respond to the needs and wishes of the community in order to become more electable, in order to better understand the relationship between representatives and their voters. 2 to 4 50 Minute Class Periods In this activity , students are wrestling with what it means to be “electable”. They will create a candidate to run against others. This can be assigned as a group assignment (so that 3 or 4 candidates are running against each other in each class), a class assignment (so that each class is constructing one candidate together to run against other sections of the class), or individually (so that each student has the ability to create their own candidate). There are countless extension activities you can do, from holding debates to having the class vote for a candidate other than their own to see who was most convincing. You can also lean into potential “holes” in candidates. For instance, if one group made their candidate a millionaire, maybe that candidate is “out of touch” with regular citizens. If another group made a candidate with 8 kids, maybe they “simply won’t have the time to govern”. There are a handful of sections students will move through. You can provide the candidate packet to students/groups as a digital file or in printed form: 1. Candidate Name 2. Candidate Appearance 3. Candidate Background and Resume 4. Candidate Slogan 5. Campaign Stances 6. Campaign Finances You can assist them in these sections and talk about benefits and drawbacks of each decision. This activity is designed to be non-partisan, which is why it is a local election activity . Try to keep students focused on the 5 “major issues” outlined in the activity . You can use the polling section to help them prioritize various issues. In general this activity can be very fun, and I suggest seeking potential scandals and other events that might happen to the community to spark excitement in the room. This can be a fun activity for students to use their creativity, wit, and sense of humor! With further questions, reach out to me at tristanjbernhard@gmail.com . Fear of insects Social Story

Fear of insects Social Story
Special Resources, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Social Skills, Special Education Needs (SEN), Not Grade Specific, Activities

For children who experience intense fear or phobias related to insects, this social story resource provides supporting explanations and coping strategies. Specifically tailored for children on the autism spectrum who may struggle reading social cues, the story aims to logically address the reasons behind insect fears and equip children with skills to manage them. Using a reassuring tone, the social story explains how most insects pose no real danger to humans, as many are so tiny compared to a person’s size. While some insects like bees can sting, the story gives facts about how insect stings rarely cause serious harm. It also highlights all the useful things insects do, like pollinating plants. The second half of the story outlines constructive ways children can deal with insect fears when encountered. This includes techniques like staying calm, thinking logical thoughts about how small insects are, and reminding themselves that insects are useful to their earth. By addressing both the emotional and reality-based sides of insect fears, this social story uses clear language and visuals to teach autistic children coping methods. It validates their feelings while also gently challenging catastrophic thinking. The final outcome is a set of strategies children can employ themselves when afraid, giving them skills, reassurance, and power to manage phobias. These books should be used over and over to reinforce the point so I would suggest either putting the pages into a display book or laminating and binding them.
