Stranger Danger Social Story

Stranger Danger Social Story
Special Resources, Life Skills, Social Skills, Special Education Needs (SEN), Not Grade Specific, Activities

Teaching children about stranger safety is crucial, but can be a scary topic. This Stranger Danger Social Story takes the fear out of this important lesson by using a warm, straightforward approach. Designed for preschool and elementary age kids, this social story clearly defines "stranger" and explains why children should never go anywhere with someone they don't know. It covers strangers in different situations, like if approached on the street, in a store or playground. Kids learn that strangers can trick them with offers of candy, pets or fun activities. Importantly, this Stranger Danger story also teaches children what to do if a stranger tries to interact with them. It provides simple steps like saying "No!", running to a trusted adult, yelling for help and reporting it right away. The empowering message is: Your body is yours and no one can take you without permission. With its therapeutic tone and real-world advice, this social story removes anxiety and arms children with strategies. It is an indispensable tool for teachers, counselors, social workers and parents wanting to broach this sensitive safety issue. Using concrete examples and a reassuring voice, this Stranger Danger guide will build awareness, confidence and essential skills to help keep kids secure. These books should be used over and over to reinforce the point so I would suggest either putting the pages into a display book or laminating and binding them. Letter Search - A-Z

Letter Search - A-Z
ELA, Language Development, Phonics, Kindergarten, Grade 1, Activities

This material is an independent and interactive exercise for visual perception of letters, eye-hand coordination and fine motor development. The pictures can be used with any reading course, regardless of the textbook. Task The pupils look for the indicated letter in the grid and place a muggle stone (glass nugget, button or similar material) on the field. The letter is additionally emphasized by the magnifying effect of the muggle stones. Each letter/sound is supplemented by a matching sound picture. Self-check Once all the letters have been found, the respective letters can be seen as a self-check. Possible uses The material is suitable, for example, for free work or stations on the respective letters during the development of the letters/sounds in initial lessons. Alternatively, pupils can also mark the letters with a marker pen. Development goals Promote visual perception: students develop the ability to identify and recognize letters in a visual pattern. Eye-hand coordination: By placing the muggle pieces on the corresponding circles, students develop their fine motor skills and improve their hand-eye coordination. Fine motor development: Grasping and placing the muggle bricks requires precise dexterity and strengthens students' fine motor skills. Alphabet awareness: The exercises help pupils to recognize the individual letters and link them to their sounds. They promote an understanding of the structure of the language. Self-checking: Once pupils have found all the letters, they can check whether they have worked correctly by looking at the letters they have put together. This promotes their independent learning and their ability to self-monitor. Preparation The color placement pictures can be laminated for multiple use or provided in a leaflet sleeve. The print-friendly or black-and-white version can be glued onto colored copy or clay paper, for example. Tip: The smaller muggle stones between 10 and 12 mm are best suited. Two Bingo Games for your students to have fun practicing adding and subtracting fractions including mixed numbers. Instructions include: Have students to make a 4 x 4 game board. They will fill in the answers in random order. This way everyone has a different board but all of the answers. Put up the first 2 questions. When all students finish #1, you can change to the second page, which still has #2 but also #3 for those that have also finished #2. This allows some students to work ahead when ready. When everyone has finished #2, move to the next screen, which has #3 and #4 as some students will be ready for #4. Continue in this way. Students can use a highlighter to mark their answers. Use a different color for each game. (Don’t have them completely mark out their answers with pen or pencil in the first game because they will use this same board in the second game.) Students MUST show their work on paper to get credit for a BINGO. For the problems that don’t have work to show, they must explain their answer on paper. The first game uses questions #1-8. In a regular size class there should be 5-6 bingos after this many questions. You can start the second game #9-16 or save that for another class time. Just make sure students save their board because both games use the same board. This skill corresponds to the 5th Grade Math Common Core Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.A.1 Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.) This 20 slide PowerPoint contains two bingo games of 8 questions each. Students will randomly fill in their own bingo boards with the given answers. All students will have every answer but in a different order on their bingo card. This way if a student works a problem and the answer is not on their card they know they have made an error. They will use the same card for both games so they must mark answers differently for each game. Detailed instructions are given in the file. The answer key is on the final slide of the PowerPoint. I usually give candy for bingos. Bingo has always been one of the best ways I have found for student engagement.
