Unions Simulation Teacher Guide Hello and thank you so much for purchasing my Unions Simulation! My students have really enjoyed this, and I have enjoyed seeing the concepts and familiar battle lines come to life. I hope your students enjoy it too! The lesson is designed to have a warm up, a goal statement, an agenda slide, a (very) brief overview of work conditions and famous strikes, then the instructions to the simulation, and then finally a quick exit ticket to cement major ideas. In general for the simulation, students are divided into one of three groups: bosses, strike-breakers, and union leadership. Each with their own desired outcome or goal. Begin by walking students through the warm-up, goal statement, agenda, and mini-lecture to refresh their minds on the era in question. To start the game , prompt the “Bosses” group to announce how much they plan to cut wages by. If needed, try to encourage the bosses to announce a pay cut in the range of $10-12/hour. This is a number that is acceptable to the replacement workers, but unacceptable to union leadership–starting conflict Next round, prompt replacement labor to negotiate with the bosses. Prompt the Union group to decide whether the pay cut is “acceptable” and if not, what actions could be taken. From there, let the simulation play out until it reaches an organic conclusion. My classes have ended a few different ways– the union getting arrested for threats of bombs, the unions accepting a pay cut to $13/hour, replacement labor being hired at $11/hour after several set-backs, etc. The key is students realizing the tenuous relationship between unions and their bosses, and union members and replacement labor. At the conclusion of the activity get students back in their designated seat, discuss the activity, and administer the exit ticket. The Constitution is A Living Document: A Project to Assess Knowledge and Understanding

The most important thing about this project, The Consitution is a Living Document, is how students truly internalize how the Constitution is not just some old stuffy document but really is alive in our lives and protects our rights and our democracy. I have had students come back to me when they are in high school to tell me how much they got out of this project. I have also had several students tell me they helped their immigrant parents pass the citizenship test. They were able to teach their parents about our government. My favorite is how many 8th-grade students tell me they are now interested in current events and regularly follow the news! The purpose of this project, The Consitution is a Living Document, is to assess students’ knowledge and understanding of the Constitution. The project is divided into 3 sections. The first section focuses on the Constitution, particularly Articles 1, 2, and 3. They will write an essay and then read 3 news articles that connect to each of these articles. They will summarize the articles and analyze how this news event connects to each of these articles. In Section 2, students will write an essay on the Bill of Rights and Amendments and read 7 more current events news articles, summarize them, and then analyze how each event connects to a specific amendment. The third section includes a Conclusion essay in which they reflect back on what they learned about themselves, doing a project of this magnitude, and about the Constitution,and a Bibliography. This is a comprehensive project and will take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks. For each section, I provide lesson plans with objectives and learning targets aligned with the Common Core Standards. teacher directions, student directions, handouts, graphic organizers, check-off sheets, and rubrics. This project could be easily modified to fit a shorter time frame. With modifications, it is appropriate for students in 6th through 12th grades. This project is part of my unit: “Our Living Consitution” which is designed using the Into, Through, and Beyond model of lesson planning. This project can be taught independently, but it is an excellent summative assessment for all my lessons on the Constitution in my unit. The lessons in the Constitution unit can be used independently or as a supplement to what you already teach or as a whole. Instead of simply presenting one viewpoint, this resource encourages students to analyze the evidence and form their own conclusions. I developed this project with my son, who has Autism, in mind. He struggles with writing and organizing his thoughts on paper. Using sorting mat activities reduced frustration and made learning more engaging. Elapsed Time: Perfect Day Math Project with Time Intervals

When teaching elementary students about elapsed time, make it personal and fun! This easy-to-use math project lets students in grades 3-6 learn about measuring the duration of time (time intervals) as they plan their perfect day. Students learn what elapsed time is and practice calculating it with a sample schedule of a teacher’s perfect day (don't worry, I included a Target run AND a nap!). Then they create their own perfect 15-hour day and calculate the elapsed time of each of their 10 activities. They can write elapsed times in hours and minutes (1 hour and 35 minutes) or in minutes only (95 minutes). They cross-check their math by adding up all 10 elapsed times and seeing if they equal the total awake time of their day (15 hours). They can use a variety of strategies to calculate elapsed time: subtraction, counting on, counting back, benchmarks, and/or number lines. Grades to Use With: This math project is designed for students in grades 3-6 who are learning about elapsed time and practicing calculating more challenging time intervals. In the USA, this is in Common Core Standards in the third grade and in British Columbia, Canada, it is addressed in Grade 5.
