Personal STEM Research Project: Each student chooses a topic of interest and answers a challenging math question about it after step-by-step mini lessons teach them how. This research project can be used in many ways: - As a whole class STEM unit with 7 mini-lessons (a great idea for Friday afternoons) - As a year/term-long project for early finishers (no more copying extra math worksheets for every single lesson!) - As an enrichment activity for a small group (for those students who are ready for an extra challenge) The unit takes students through the step-by-step process using an example (how much water is needed to fill an ice rink for the NHL). The 7 steps are: o Topic: Help your students choose a topic and then narrow it down. This way your students will be invested in this project because it is about something that interests them! o Question: Brainstorm questions about that topic that need math to be solved. Help guided your students to a question that will have more than one step to solve. o Skills: Practice/learn skills needed to answer the question. Your students can use math websites like IXL, youtube videos, or their textbook to learn/review skills. o Research: Complete research to find necessary information. Students will need to find science and technology information to answer many of their questions. o Math: Put the skills and research together to find the answer! o Present: Think of a creative way to present the solution to the class. o Reflect: Take time to think back on the process. Grades: This project works well for intermediate/middle school aged students in grades 5-8. It could also be used in a high school special education classroom with extra support.

AM Words Fluency Practice

Kindergartners and first graders will get a ton of practice reading AM words with these fluency activities. All target words are part of the AM word family. Students will practice reading these CVC words in isolation as well as in context of a simple sentence or passage. What is Included: Word Fluency Strips - These three strips only contain AM words in isolation. Students will practice reading the words on the strips until words are mastered. Sentence Strips - The sentence strips contain AM words in the context of simple sentences. Sentence Fluency Worksheet - Students will read the simple sentences then pick one sentence to illustrate in the box at the bottom of the worksheet. Reading Comprehension Passage - Students will read the story containing AM words three times then answer two comprehension questions and draw a picture to illustrate the story. Sentence Pyramids - There are eight sentence pyramids where students will read each sentence, adding a new word on each line. How to Use: These activities word very well in a reading or phonics center for students to work on independently or with a partner. They make great small group activities. Teachers can pull aside small groups of students who need extra practice reading AM words with fluency. The sentence fluency worksheets and reading comprehension page can be utilized as homework to send home for students to complete. Skills Assessed: These fluency worksheets and activities assess students' ability to read AM words in isolation or in the context of sentences. Students will practice reading comprehension skills with the reading passage page. The worksheets are print and go, no prep activity for teachers to prepare for students. They just need to be printed out and given to students to complete. The sentence strips and pyramid cards need to be printed and cut apart. These low prep cards can also be laminated for durability if desired.

Valentine's Day Proportion Pixel Art Activity This Valentine's Day themed, proportions activity offers a fun and engaging way for your students to practice. They will solve 20 proportions using Google Sheets and as they answer each question correctly, a mystery picture pixel art will be revealed. If their answer is wrong, the pixel art will not appear. My seventh-grade students enjoyed this no-prep, self-checking activity when I used it as a sub-plan. This is a self-check practice where students will know when they arrive at the right answer. It is easy to implement, as students can access it through the link embedded on the PDF. This activity may be implemented after a lesson, as a closing activity, an exit ticket or even a formative assessment . Additionally, students may work individually, together in pairs, or even in groups, to arrive at the right answer and have the picture reveal. It can also be set up as a center activity or for a tutoring session with individual students. If there is no ability to set up this activity as google sheet for individual students, it can always just be printed out for students to provide the answers and then the teacher can show the mystery picture to all students. This is a great resource, easy to implement, engaging for students, self-check, and just as important, a fun way for students to practice with a fun theme of Valentine's Day!

What is Included: This packet contains 42 transportation vocabulary ring cards, and 4 different cover cards to create one large ring for all vehicles, or you can create a ring of land vehicles, a ring of water vehicles and a ring of air vehicles. How to Use: These transportation vocabulary rings can be laminated and placed in the writing center for students to refer to when writing. Students can flip through the cards easily to familiarize themselves with the different modes of transportation. The small nature of these cards allows teachers will small writing spaces the ability to add helpful writing aids for their students. As students are writing their transportation filled stories, they can use these vocabulary rings to help them spell words they need help spelling, or to spark ideas for new adventures for their writing. Students can also use the vocabulary rings to label their drawings. Skills Assessed: Students will learn new vocabulary and practice using the vocabulary by labeling pictures, writing sentences, or writing stories. These transportation vocabulary rings are a low prep addition to your writing center. Simply print, cut apart, and place on a ring to make the vocabulary ring. The cards can be place inside the center and watch your students' imaginations come to life in their writings. Laminating the cards is optional, but recommended for durability.
