Colorful Semantics is a Speech and Language therapy technique which uses color coded cards to help children to learn the important elements of a sentence,and how to join them together in the correct order. Colorful semanticsbreaks down sentences into their thematic roles and then color codes them to help children to learn the important elements of a sentence,and how to join them together in the correct order. The approach initially has 4 key color codes: subject is orange, verb is yellow, object is green and place is blue. As children progress in their understanding there are further stages for adverbs, adjectives and time. This set has boards for children to form the sentence using cards and then write it out underneath. There are 2 different designs of board with different writing lines. There are also different boards for different sentence types and lengths to differentiate to the child’s ability. Colorful semantics is perfect for use with young children learning correct sentence formation or in specialist settings with children with special educational needs. Chernobyl: Interactive Website Activity

Chernobyl was a nuclear power plant in Ukraine, which had a terrible accident in 1986. An explosion and a fire happened in the reactor, which released a lot of radioactive material into the air. Radiation is a type of energy that can be harmful to humans and animals if they are exposed to too much of it. The radioactive material from the Chernobyl accident spread over a large area, and many people and animals were exposed to it. The radiation made some people very sick, and some even died from radiation poisoning. Many people had to leave their homes and never go back because the area was too dangerous to live in. After the accident, many countries worked together to try to clean up the area and make it safe again. They built a big structure called the "sarcophagus" around the damaged reactor to contain the radioactive material. People still work to make the area safer today. The Chernobyl accident was a tragedy, but it also taught us a lot about the importance of nuclear safety and the dangers of radiation. We continue to learn from it and work to prevent similar accidents from happening in the future. In this activity, students use the worksheet to explore the History Channel's Chernobyl website to find the answers to the worksheet . Students can work in pairs or individually to complete the task. This game provides 2 activities in one, either matching letters (initial sounds) to pictures or pictures to letters (initial sounds). For use: In the classroom - centres, paired activities, intervention etc.. At home - by parents + home-educators Aim of the Initial/Beginning Sounds Matching game: ·That the child will be able to match the correct letter to the correct picture by initial (or beginning) sound ·That children will hear the initial (or beginning) sound of a word ·That children will know the sound that each letter /a/ to /h/ stands for To prepare the Initial/Beginning Sounds Matching game: Choose either pictures or sounds to be the baseboard (you can always print it twice and play it both ways and this is recommended if the child needs extra practice). Cut up the boards not chosen as baseboards into individual cards. To play the Initial/Beginning Sounds Matching game: Scatter the cards (letter or picture as you have chosen) on the table face down. Players take turns to choose a card. The sound should be said - either the initial sound of the picture or the sound the letter stands for. A match should be attempted with the letters/pictures on the player's board. If a match is made, the card is placed on the corresponding square. If not, the card is returned, face down, to the table. The winner is the player who completes his/her board first. Teaching tips for the Initial/Beginning Sounds Matching game: Do give support as needed so that the child feels successful. Finger Puppets - Little Red Riding Hood - Fairy Tale With this material, you get craft templates for finger puppets for the story "Little Red Riding Hood". This skateboarding reading comprehension includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. Do some, do none, do all, completely optional - but you will feel reassured knowing every possibility is planned for. Includes summary writting question.
