Initial Sounds Screening Test: Phonic Test
Special Resources, ELA, Special Education Needs (SEN), Language Development, Phonics, Kindergarten, Preschool, Tests, Quizzes and Tests, Teacher Tools

Initial sounds Phonics Test This is a fun test to find out whether children can hear the initial, or beginning sound of words, or not. The test requires the teacher to ask: What sound does _____ begin with? The child has bright colourful pictures on each of the three pages and plenty of space to record his/her answer next to each picture. Who is the Initial Sounds Phonics Test for? This test is for anyone who teaches the initial sounds to children, be that Pre-K, K, ESL, EFL, Private tutors, home educators, or parents at home. Full instructions as to how to administer the test are provided, including solutions in case of misidentification of pictures. Format: The test has a bright cover, with space for the child’s name. it also includes a quick reference chart so that the teacher can quickly see which sounds a child does not yet know. Instructions and rationale: Print as a booklet (A3 paper required), or print the A4 pages individually and staple them together. Full instructions are included. Testing has got a bad name, but it is crucial that every teacher informally tests all of their pupils regularly to make sure that every child is ready for the next step. If we wish children to succeed in learning to read and spell with phonics, then we must check this very first skill thoroughly. Children will not think it is a test, with its bright pictures and appealing layout. Testing tips: Make sure every child can hear the initial sounds before they start to blend. Help every child succeed in reading! During the test, speak clearly and repeat a word as often as needed. Observation of the child's response is as important as what the child records. Was there any hesitation? Did the child make any corrections? How confident did the child appear? Included: 1 PDF Which includes pages to make a 4-page booklet, including a cover Teacher instructions Size A4

Alphabet Flashcards: Phonetic: Words and Pictures A set of 26 letters with 26 matching pictures to help children learn the letters, their sounds and beginning sounds of words in preparation for learning to read with phonics. There are many ways to use the alphabet flashcards Several activities are suggested: The child can be asked to match the whole set of letters, A-Z, with the matching pictures, by beginning sound. Sound match: Select the sounds you want your pupil to practice - the number can vary according to the needs of the child: find the matching letters and pictures, and either lay them on the table or, for more active children, you could place them around the room for the child to find. Either let the child select/find a picture and then find the sound it begins with, or vice versa. Sound match: Select the sounds you want your pupil to practice - the number can vary according to the needs of the child: find the matching letters and pictures. Place one set, either letters or pictures, on the table, spread out. Hold the other in your hand. Show the child a card from your hand and ask the pupil to find the matching letter/picture. Play I Spy: Place a selection of letters and pictures (not necessarily matching) on the table face up. Say, I spy with my little eye the letter (and say the sound), or something that begins with the sound ... (say the sounds). Play memory match: turn a selection of pictures and their matching letters face down on the table. Take it in turns to choose 2 cards, turn them over and see if they match...replace any that do not - but can you remember where they are for when you need them? Children love this game! Who are the alphabet flashcards for? All ages and abilities Special needs children ESL, EFL learners, Who can use the phonetic alphabet flashcards? Class teachers Parents Home educators Private tutors Anyone who needs it! What is included? 18 pages 1 PDF 26 pictures 26 letters For a comprehensive set of alphabet flashcards, with letters and 2 sets of picture cards, see here. Alphabet Flashcards Here is a colourful set of Alphabet Flashcards – sure to delight any child. As a bonus, as I know that some children are transport lovers, I have included two pictures for some letters to provide a form of transport to appeal to these children (i.e.: H for helicopter, R for rocket, L for lorry, F for fire and fire engine, A for ambulance). This set of alphabet flashcards is equally suited to a variety of needs: · The parent with a young child · The teacher in the classroom · The classroom assistant · The SEN teacher · The ESL/EFL teacher They can be used in all situations to help children learn those all-important alphabet/beginning/initial sounds and become familiar with both upper- and lower-case letter shapes. Suggested ways in which to use the Alphabet Flashcards: · Pin them on the wall in order as a display: ask the child to point to the letters either by name, by sound, or by picture (beginning sound). · Look around the house/classroom for things that begin with the same sound as the object on a given flashcard. · Choose several cards (suitable for the needs of the child you are playing with) and lay them out on the table face up: Play I spy: I spy with my little eye something beginning with ‘….’. · Bean bag toss: Lay a selection of flashcards on the floor and give the child a bean bag. Ask – can you toss the bean bag onto the picture that begins with..’..’. · Print duplicates and play snap! · Help the child to put the flashcards in alphabetical order! Format: Four flashcards print to an A4 page, formatted to fit the page on a cheap HP printer. It is advised that the flashcards be laminated to make them more durable. They will get hard wear! What is included? 1 PDF 11 pages 46 pictures (2 for some sounds as indicated above) For a comprehensive set of alphabet flashcards, with letters and 2 sets of picture cards, see here.
