Critical Thinking: Debate with Yourself- Modern Debate Prompts for High School English or Social Studies This is a resource designed to get your students thinking about current issues. It provides five different prompts, inviting students to wrestle with modern issues across themes like personal finance, technology, environmental impact, higher education choices and social media use. In each scenario presented, students are tasked with researching both sides of an issue independently before deciding where they fall on the issue. A Twist to Classroom Debates This activity allows students to 'debate with themselves'. They need to collect support for both sides of the issue before determining their own opinion. This can work well as a small group activity or an individual assignment. Prompt Examples You have been approved for your first credit card (with a $1000 limit). Should you accept this offer? What are the benefits and risks, and what do you need to consider before signing up? You have been accepted into a reasonably-priced state college and a much more expensive university farther from home. What are the pros and cons of each option and which one would you choose? You have an 8 year-old car that runs well, but it is not an electric vehicle. Which is better for the environment: driving the old car longer or getting a brand new electric vehicle? How to Use: These prompts can be used in a variety of ways: Assign different prompts to each student. They research both sides of the issue and write their final opinion. After researching, you could hold a whole class debate where you either assign students to each side or let them choose which side they want to be on. Each side can present their points and rebuttals can be made. Students could (individually or in small groups) present their opinion to the class in a short speech or using a Powerpoint. You could use these topics and the accompanying research as the prompt for a persuasive essay assignment. What's Included: Title Page and a total of 5 different prompts in PDF format. Self-Editing COPS Cards - An Effective Tool for Student Proofreading These COPS cards are an easy way to help teach your elementary students a simple mnemonic for proofreading or editing their written work. You could teach a mini lesson for each letter of COPS: capitalization rules one day, organization another, then punctuation, and finally spelling. For each letter there are a couple of key ideas that students need to practice. What does COPS stand for? COPS is an acronym addressing the critical elements of good writing that every student should check upon completing an assignment: Capitals At the start of every sentence For people’s names (proper nouns) and “I” Other proper nouns: days, months, place names, etc. Organization Different paragraphs for each different idea Include a topic sentence at the start Verb tenses are consistent throughout Punctuation Use a period, question mark, or exclamation mark for every sentence Use commas for dates, lists, and joining sentences together with a conjunction Use quotation marks if a character is speaking Spelling Check in a dictionary Ask your teacher or a friend Think of related words to find a pattern How to Use: Print these cards 4 or 6 to a page. You can cut them out and laminate them so students can place them on their desks or in their writing folder. You could print a larger version to hang on your wall as a poster , or you could project the PDF on an interactive whiteboard. Grades to Use With: These COPS cards are appropriate for students in elementary grades (2-6) who are learning how to proofread their own written work for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and organization. The introduction of multiplication in 3rd grade marks an important milestone in a child's mathematical development. Students transition from relying solely on counting strategies to understanding the relationship between repeated addition and multiplication. The resource covering "Multiplication with Groups, Arrays, and Repeated Addition - 3rd Grade" can be downloaded from here The next logical step afterwards is to approach the introduction of division in the same way, with visual support using Arrays and equal groupings. In fact by doing it this way, students will also get to see the connection between multiplication and division. Because division is the inverse, or “opposite,” of multiplication, Arrays help students understand how multiplication and division are related. For multiplication we want the product of two factors, in division are looking for a missing factor once you are given the other factor and the product, or in division terms a divisor and the dividend. Making their own arrays reinforces this relationship. Building arrays helps students see and think about the connection between the dividend, divisor and quotient and the building of the division equation. Grouping objects into equal sets reinforces the understanding of division as splitting into equal parts. Students learn that the total number of objects, the number of groups and number of items in each group can be connected and again expressed in a much more concise way with a division equation. This versatile activity mixes math and art, as students explore colorful crayons and the ways they can be sorted into equal groups. Students dive into the factors of 24 through categorizing crayons in different ways. All you need for supplies is one box of 24 crayons for each learning group. Incorporating teamwork, creativity, and systemization, students work in groups, with each one tasked with finding a unique way of organizing their 24 crayons. There are 6 different worksheets for 6 different ways of organizing the crayons (2 equal groups, 3 equal groups, 4 equal groups, 6 equal groups, 8 equal groups, and 12 equal groups. For example, students assigned to split their crayons into two equal groups, might create a rule of warm and cool colors. They will discover that each group has 12 crayons. They will use each crayon to color one of the boxes on their worksheet. You can then have each group present their findings to the class, and in this way you will discover all the fact families (factors) of 24! Students might also start to notice patterns such 6x4 and 4x6 which allows for a discussion of the commutative property of multiplication. This is a fun and easy game to add to your fractions unit to help students practice working with mixed numbers and improper fractions. Students must demonstrate knowledge of what makes an improper fraction, how to convert an improper fraction into a mixed number, and how to order and compare mixed numbers. I suggest using 10-sided dice (if possible) for a wider variety of outcomes. I encourage my students to use mini-whiteboards for recording their work and doing their calculations. Student Instructions: 1) You and your partner each roll the die two times so you each have two numbers. 2) Use your two numbers to make an IMPROPER FRACTION (which one should be the numerator?). 3) Write down your improper fraction and convert it to a mixed number. 4) Compare with your partner’s mixed number. Which number is bigger? You might have to find a common denominator if the whole numbers are the same. 5) The person with the larger number gets a point. Play until one person has five points. Grades to Use With: This is a simple game that can be an addition to a lesson or fraction review in grades 3-7 when students are working with fractions that have a value greater than one.
