Character Chart

Character Chart
Reading Comprehension, Reading, ELA, Grade 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, Charts, Teacher Tools, Graphic Organizers

This character chart set gives a reading teacher fourteen ready charts and asks nothing of the text in return. Whatever your class is reading this month - a class novel, a short story in an anthology, a play, a picture book, a documentary - the same fourteen pages fit it, because none of them names a title, an author or a character. What separates these from a stack of blank boxes is that the headings do the teaching. One page asks students to sort words into traits and feelings, and to justify the sort from the text rather than from the word itself, because deciding whether stubborn and angry belong in the same category is where careful character reading actually begins. Another page holds two questions apart that are almost always run together: whether a character changes across a story, and whether a character is simple or complex. Those are independent, a character can be complex and unchanging, and students who have never been shown that will happily write that a round character must therefore be dynamic. A third page walks the five signals of indirect characterization one at a time and then asks what the five add up to, so the letters end as a judgement rather than as a collection. The comparison page prints its own questions down the left-hand side. Two characters then get measured against the same six things instead of producing two unrelated lists that never meet, which is what an unlabelled two-column sheet tends to produce. The final page is a planner: a claim in one sentence, two pieces of evidence, and an explanation of how the second proves the first, with a plain instruction to change the claim if the evidence will not support it. Pages are one chart each, ruled generously enough to write sentences rather than single words, and printed in black on white so a class set costs almost nothing. A line at the top of every page records the title of the text, so a folder of finished charts is still readable at report time. There is no key, because the evidence lives in whatever the student is reading.

Behavior Target Reward Charts

Behavior Target Reward Charts
Special Resources, Resources for Teachers, Classroom Management, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Special Education Needs (SEN), Not Grade Specific, Charts, Teacher Tools

Blending visual schedules and motivational reward systems yields an effective behavior management tool for classrooms and home. These charts allow teachers to set personalized conduct goals for each student while providing a clear schedule of activities. The set includes two sizes of “Now and Next” boards detailing current lessons/tasks and then the chosen reward. Change the illustrated activity cards daily. When students complete the “Now” activity and follow behavior goals, they earn their chosen reward. In order to gain the reward the chart shows given targets that they should work toward which will personal to the individual child. Sixteen illustrated reward options like computer time, bubbles, or time playing with their chosen toy allow children to see the payoff for positive behavior. Teachers can tailor the options to each child's preferences. At clean up time, students remove their schedule cards and do a reflection worksheet. This prompts discussion about their day's conduct and feelings. Did they earn their reward? Why or why not? The reflection teaches self-evaluation skills. Combining scheduling, rewards and reflection provides structure and motivation. Children understand the behavioral objectives and see their progress. The routine builds self-discipline, on-task behavior and social skills. Parents and teachers can align targets like "keeping hands to self" with individual needs. An engaging system offering consistency, incentives and clear expectations benefits learning and development. In this file there are two different formats of now and next chart one with 1 lesson and one with 2 lessons. There are also 48 lesson and activity picture cards and 16 different reward cards for the child to choose from. There is also a chart for the children to do their own personal target reflection at the end of the day to promote discussion about how they think their day has been. Community Helpers Pocket Chart Game

Community Helpers Pocket Chart Game Support your students’ learning with thisCommunity Helpers Pocket Chart Game. This resource was specifically designed to sharpen students’ letter and number identification. What You Get: (included in color and black and white) A 15-page printable PDF. The PDF will include activity cards and a title cover option with directions to use for the bin that you store the cards in. How to Use the Community Helpers Pocket Chart Game: Kids love this carpet game. I set it up as part of our circle time or whole group lessons, and kids beg to play it over and over. This game works great with a community helpers, safety, or career thematic unit and helps students learn to identify numbers 0-10 or 0-20 depending on how many cards you set out. This also works great as an uppercase letter and lowercase letter alphabet review activity. Set up is simple: Print, cut, and laminate. I store my pocket chart games in Ziploc bags and keep them in a tub under my easel. To play: Set up letter cards behind each community helper card. You will sing a song. The student you called will come up and point to a community helper card. The class will say the number on the card. The teacher will lift the card revealing a letter card. Enrichment: I like to really make this game pack a learning punch by asking students the animal colors, having them draw numbers in the air or on their hands with a finger, asking them how many cards are left, and asking them to hold up that many fingers in different ways. These quick variations keep the game exciting as well. I hope you enjoy!!
