Novel Study Vocabulary Strategies word search, scramble and crossword

Novel Study Vocabulary Strategies word search, scramble and crossword
Holiday & Seasonal, ELA, Reading, Language Development, Vocabulary, Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Word Searches, Worksheets, Worksheets & Printables, Crosswords Puzzles

Novel Study Vocabulary Strategies word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this novel study vocabulary strategies puzzle set for my 4th graders during our novel unit. The kids could read the words but had no idea what strategies like context clues, vocabulary, or glossary meant when we talked about figuring out new words. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like context clues, vocabulary, glossary, dictionary, predict, infer, and text feature. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the novel study vocabulary strategies finally stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or indoor recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether a dictionary and glossary are the same thing. The crossword I use for partners or as a review. I added a couple simple book, magnifying glass, and lightbulb drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write a sentence using a new vocabulary word from their novel on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using transition words like first, next, then, finally, meanwhile, later, after, before, soon, suddenly, therefore, however, for example, in conclusion, and on the other hand. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the paragraph flow finally improve. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether "suddenly" works for nonfiction writing. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple arrow and bridge drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write three sentences about their morning using three different transition words on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

September 11th word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
Holiday & Seasonal, ELA, Reading, Language Development, Vocabulary, Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Word Searches, Worksheets, Worksheets & Printables, Crosswords Puzzles

September 11th word search, scramble and crossword puzzle During our modern history unit, I created this September 11th puzzle set for my fifth-graders. I tackled this one with extreme caution since some children have emotional or familial ties. The children had heard the date, but they had no idea what had happened or why we remembered it. I used words like September 11, 2001, terrorist, attack, twin towers, Pentagon, flight, hero, firefighter, police, rescue, remember, honor, united, and never forget to create a word search, word scramble, and crossword puzzle. Just polite language to aid in their understanding—nothing graphic. There are four pages in the PDF. One answer key sheet and three riddles. After recess, the word search is a great way to pass the time. They ask genuine questions about what heroes did that day, which sparks conversation during the scramble. After a class discussion, I assign a crossword to my partners. I didn't sketch anything disturbing or violent, just a light and the American flag. Only suitable for fifth graders. Print and go, but only after a thorough conversation. I occasionally ask early finishers to write on the back how Americans pulled together in the wake of 9/11. The children treat this with dignity.

Christopher Columbus word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this Christopher Columbus puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our exploration unit. The kids knew the rhyme about sailing the ocean blue in 1492 but had no idea where he landed or how many voyages he made. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like Columbus, explorer, Spain, voyage, ship, Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria, Atlantic, ocean, island, Caribbean, native, discovery, and 1492. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the facts finally stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether Columbus actually reached the mainland of North America. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple ship and compass drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers name Columbus's three ships on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

Women's Suffrage word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this women's suffrage puzzle set for my 4th graders during our social studies unit. The kids knew women could vote now but had no idea that it wasn't always that way or who fought to change it. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like suffrage, vote, election, woman, women's rights, equality, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, 19th Amendment, Constitution, protest, parade, Congress, ratification, and 1920. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally make sense. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether women could vote before 1920. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple "Votes for Women" sign and ribbon drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write one fact about Susan B. Anthony on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

Types of Plants word search, scramble and crossword ⭐I made this types of plants puzzle set for my 3rd graders during our life science unit. The kids could name a few flowers but got lost when I tried teaching them about ferns, mosses, and conifers. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like flowering, conifer, fern, moss, algae, herb, shrub, tree, and seed. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they mix up "conifer" and "flowering" sometimes. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple leaf and flower drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 2nd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one plant type and draw a tiny example on the back. The kids actually enjoy these.
