As it can become quite mundane doing the same activities over and over, each lesson in a set will contain a different spelling and vocab activity . Activities include: spelling games, sentence match-ups, mixed-up text and decoding words from the lesson. Writing Prompts Writing prompts are designed to continue the theme or lessons learned in the story. Students are persuaded to write in a variety of ways and each prompt includes several cues to help. As with the spelling/vocab section, writing prompts will vary. This includes research pieces, reading responses, poetry and creative writing prompts. This is an engaging math project that lets students apply math skills to a realistic situation: opening their own store! Grades to Use With: This project is perfect to use with your middle grades students in grades 5-8. It could also be a great addition to a high school life skills class studying finance, business, or careers. How to Use: Each of your students has won $2,000,000 in the lottery, and they are going to use it to open their very own store! They create a budget for a new business venture by considering the costs to rent a commercial storefront in your area, pay employees, and buy all of the supplies and stock they will need. They can do research on the internet to find out the prices of rental properties and the supplies they will need. They can do decimal calculations by hand or with a calculator. This will include adding decimals and multiplying decimals. Extension: Students who finish early can create an advertisement to attract customers to their new store. You could even have a day where each student presents their unique store idea to the class. Standards: CCSS5.NBT.B.7 Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. CCSS7.NS.A.3 Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with rational numbers. This 6 Page Financial Literacy PDF teaches your students about assets, liabilities, and net worth (equity). It is an easy way to get your high school students interested in personal financial literacy and building their wealth. 3 case studies are included with calculations to complete and questions to respond to. Each person has some assets and some liabilities. Students must add each of these categories up and find the difference to see how much net worth each person has. Then they need to think about what changes each person could make to their financial habits. Perhaps one person has too much debt or someone else isn't investing much even with a high income. Students can start to see how high income does not always lead to high net worth if the person spends more than they make and has debt. On the other hand, someone with a lower income can have a high net worth if they live a frugal lifestyle and save money in investments or property equity. Just because someone "looks" rich, doesn't mean that they are! Grades to Use WIth: The actual math in this assignment is quite simple: adding and subtracting numbers to the hundred thousands. Students could do the work by hand or with a calculator. This Summer Olympic Themed Mixed Operation Word Problems Task Cards is a set of word problems centered around the Olympics and various sports competed in the summer Olympic games. There are 16 addition/subtraction problems and 12 multiplication/division problems. Some of the problems presented are single step, some are multi-step. The addition/subtraction problems and the multiplication/division problems are presented one in each page, so that these can be printed and laminated and reused. A sheet for students to record their answers is included. as well as an answer sheet for each of the problems. They are also presented four to a page (task card size) to print and laminate and use in a scoot or as a group activity or station. It is recommended that you print them on card stock and laminate them to keep them strong and usable for years to come. This resource was designed for 3rd, 4th, and/or 5th graders. Though it could be used for any student who needs to practice solving word problems with addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. There are large versions for a classroom hunt or display, small task-card size versions (with an answer sheet for scoots), and a digital Google Slides version for paper-less or virtual classrooms. The small task-card size versions may be used in math centers for students to practice these skills independently or in small groups. Additionally, these could be used as guides for them to create their own word problems. An answer key is provided with this product. They are written based on the VA Math SOL 3.3 (addition and subtraction) and VA Math SOL 3.4 (multiplication and division) but work for any grade level doing mixed operation word problems. This is a passage about the more "impossible" moments in Winter Olympic history. It is written on a 3rd-4th grade level and talks about the 1980 US Hockey Team and the 1988 Jamaican Bobsled team. These are two winter sports that the students are likely familiar with and the stories are interesting so it engages students while they read and answer questions. You can use this as a center, guided reading activity , homework, assessment, or just general reading check. The passage is available as a printable activity or there is a link to a Google Slides activity for students to complete digitally. An answer key is provided.
