Back to School Icebreaker Activity in French

This back to school icebreaker activity provides an entertaining way for French language learners to get to know their classmates at the start of the school year. Students play Two Truths and a Lie by writing three statements about themselves - two true statements and one lie. Peers try to guess which statement is the lie. This fun icebreaker encourages students to find common interests or learn unique facts while using their French skills. Educators can facilitate whole-class discussions afterwards about what surprises students discovered about each other. Whether implemented with individual students, small groups, or a full class, this activity breaks the ice so learners feel comfortable sharing ideas in French.

Learning objectives

Students write three first-person sentences about themselves in French, two true and one false.
Students listen to and evaluate classmates' spoken French sentences to identify the false statement.

Teaching tips

Have students complete their card before the community-circle activity so the writing and the spoken game happen as two clearly separated steps.
Use the first facilitation method (reading your own card and taking a class vote) with a class that is comfortable speaking, and the second (drawing a random folded card) when students may be shy about being the center of attention.
In the second method, students read the name and three statements on the drawn card. Ask the writer to wait for guesses before revealing the lie.
