Caught in the Act of Being Kind

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately about our society and how divided we are, so I came up with the idea of this character building and classroom community activity, Caught in the Act of Being Kind, to help our children become kinder to one another and adults. You can do this with one classroom, your team or the entire school. To make it even more effective, it can be used at home with parents and siblings.

This is a simple idea, whenever you or your students see someone doing a kind deed for someone else, they will give that person a Caught in the Act of Being Kind card or the receiver of the kind act may give the person a card to be put into their Caught in the Act Booklet.

As educators, we know that when we do something kind or charitable for another person, it is not only beneficial to them, but it allows us to feel some warm fuzzies too. This can be done throughout the school year.

When I did this activity with my 6th graders, Words can’t express the way everyone felt after giving and receiving their cards. The twinkle in their eyes and the smiles on there faces were priceless. I can say that we became more like to a family and less like a classroom. The end of the year came too soon and we all hugged and cried as we said good-bye. It was a year that I’ll never forget and I’m sure they won’t either.
