Classic Literature Introduction Terms word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this classic literature introduction terms puzzle set for my 4th and 5th graders during our classic literature unit. The kids could read the words but had no idea what words like classic, legacy, or timeless meant when we talked about stories that have lasted a long time. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like classic, timeless, legacy, author, theme, message, tradition, and hero. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the classic literature vocabulary finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or indoor recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether a book has to be old to be a classic. The crossword I use for partners or as a review. I added a couple simple open book, quill, and star drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 4th through 6th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write one classic book they have read or want to read on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
