Community Helpers Police and Firefighters word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this community helpers police and firefighters puzzle set for my 1st and 2nd graders during our community unit. The kids knew about police officers and firefighters from books and visits, but they had no idea what words like badge, uniform, or fire truck meant when we talked about the jobs and tools these helpers use. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like police, firefighter, badge, uniform, helmet, fire truck, police car, siren, whistle, rescue, safety, and patrol. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or indoor recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether a police car has a siren or a whistle. The crossword I use for partners or as a review. I added a couple simple badge, fire truck, and police hat drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for K through 3rd grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers draw a picture of a community helper and label two tools they use on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
