Desert Plants word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this desert plants puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our ecosystems unit. The kids knew about cacti, but they had no idea about other desert plants like the Joshua tree, creosote bush, or agave, or what words like succulent, dormant, or adaptation meant when we talked about how plants survive extreme heat and little rain . So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like cactus, succulent, yucca, agave, aloe, creosote, Joshua tree, ocotillo, mesquite, dormancy, adaptation, and xerophyte . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "ocotillo" or whether a succulent and a cactus are the same thing (they're not — cacti are a type of succulent, but not all succulents are cacti, and the kids always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review after we've looked at pictures of these amazing plants and talked about how each one survives in the harsh desert environment .
Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one desert plant from the puzzles and write one adaptation it has to survive in the desert on the back . The kids actually ask for these now.
