DIY Science Experiments Vocabulary word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this DIY science experiments vocabulary puzzle set for my 4th graders during our hands-on science unit. The kids loved doing experiments, but they had no idea what words like hypothesis, observation, or variable meant when we started talking about the scientific method. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like science, experiment, hypothesis, observation, variable, data, result, conclusion, test, and materials . I also included a few like "safety" and "goggles" because they kept coming up in our class discussions . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess, and the scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "hypothesis" (it's a tricky one) or whether a variable and a control are the same thing (they're not—they always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have a simple scientific method anchor chart nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see how the terms are connected . I added a couple simple beaker, magnifying glass, and safety goggles drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 4th through 6th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write a simple hypothesis about something they could test on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
