Scientific Method word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this scientific method puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our first science unit of the year. The kids had done experiments before but couldn't name the steps or explain what a hypothesis was. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like question, hypothesis, prediction, experiment, variable, control, observe, record, data, results, conclusion, analyze, test, repeat, and theory. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether you can skip steps in the scientific method. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple beaker and clipboard drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write the six steps of the scientific method in order on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Recall and correctly spell the vocabulary of the scientific method (hypothesis, variable, independent, dependent, control, constant, data, qualitative, quantitative, conclusion, theory, law) across three puzzle formats.

Teaching tips

  • Rotate the three puzzles across a science unit rather than assigning them all at once -- the crossword's clue definitions ('Changed by scientist,' 'Stays same for comparison') double as a quick vocabulary quiz, while the scramble and search are lower-stakes reinforcement.

Skills covered

  • Scientific-method vocabulary recall -- students match short definitions to the correct term across a crossword, scramble, and search, reinforcing spelling and meaning together (pages 1-6).

Questions teachers ask about this resource

Are the puzzles self-checking?

Yes -- each of the three puzzles is a two-page PDF: a blank puzzle page followed by a fully completed answer page, so students or teachers can check work immediately.
