About this resource

What's inside this resource

Young learners help a squirrel count acorns while they practice numbers 1–10 with ten frames. On page 1, children count a small row of acorns, color or mark one box in the ten frame for each acorn, and write or say how many. Page 2 turns the task around: children read a number and color that many acorns in a frame of acorn outlines, then point and count to check.

Page 3 stretches the same skills. Children add boxes to make 9 and make 10, decide which of two frames has more acorns, and take one acorn away to see how many stay. The last page is an adult guide with a short model to read aloud, answers for all 12 items and ideas for using counters. Children can point, speak or mark their answers, so the pages work before they write numbers with ease.

  • Preschool–Grade 1: counting, showing and comparing quantities to 10
  • Four pages: three student pages with 12 items and an adult guide with the answer key
  • Printing: choose the full-color pages or the black-and-white set

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Count a set of up to 10 objects, matching one box to each object.

  • Show a given number from 1 to 10 by coloring or marking that many objects.

  • Fill a ten frame to make 9 and 10 from a partly filled frame.

Teaching tips

  • Read each direction aloud and model the first item: touch two acorns, mark two boxes and say “two.”

  • Accept pointing, spoken numbers or adult scribing, as the guide suggests, so the focus stays on counting rather than handwriting.

  • Have children slide real counters onto the pictured acorns to check one-to-one counting.

Skills covered

  • One-to-one counting: children mark one ten-frame box for each pictured acorn and say the total.

  • Number to quantity: children read a numeral such as 7 and color exactly that many acorn outlines.

  • Making 10: children add boxes to a frame that already shows 6 until all ten are filled.

Questions teachers ask about this resource

What age is this for?

Preschool through first grade. An adult reads the directions aloud, and children can point, speak or mark their answers.

Numbers 1 to 10. Page 1 counts small groups of 1 to 4 acorns, page 2 shows numbers from 5 to 8, and page 3 builds to 9 and 10.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The adult guide on page 4 lists the answer for every item and notes that any ten-frame arrangement with the correct count is fine.
