Fire Safety word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this fire safety puzzle set for my 1st and 2nd graders during our safety unit, especially around Fire Prevention Week. The kids knew fire was hot but had no idea what to do if there was a real fire or how to prevent one. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like smoke, alarm, detector, fire, flame, heat, match, lighter, candle, space heater, escape, plan, meeting place, stop, drop, roll, crawl, low, air, firefighter, 911, extinguisher, and practice. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the fire safety rules finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether you should stop, drop, and roll if your clothes catch on fire. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple smoke detector, fire, and firefighter hat drawings but nothing too scary.

Works for K through 3rd grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write the three steps of stop, drop, and roll on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
