Grade 1 Opposites word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this opposites puzzle set for my 1st graders during our vocabulary unit. The kids could name a few opposites like big and small, but they had no idea about more nuanced pairs like heavy and light, or fast and slow. They also kept mixing up "hot" and "cold" when we started sorting things by temperature. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using pairs like hot/cold, big/small, fast/slow, tall/short, happy/sad, up/down, in/out, open/closed, day/night, loud/quiet, hard/soft, and wet/dry. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the opposites vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess, and the scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether "happy" and "sad" are opposites or just different. The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have a set of picture cards showing the pairs nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the contrast . I added a couple simple sun/cloud, big/small, and happy/sad face drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 1st through 2nd grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers draw one pair of opposites on the back and label them. The kids actually ask for these now.
